The Arts for Health team at South Staffordshire and Shropshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust is pleased to announce their success in securing £15,000 funding from the Postcode Community Trust.

The money will support their Songs for You programme taking place in Stafford, Cannock and Shrewsbury over the next couple of years.

Songs for You provides fortnightly singing sessions for people with dementia, their carers and older adults to come together and sing a range of well-known songs plus some new ones in a safe and friendly environment. The project is vital for people who love to sing, have an interest in music or just want to be somewhere joyous and friendly – where they can share interests with others. There is always a chance for a cuppa and a piece of cake, plus laughter as well as plenty of singing.

The sessions are well-attended as singing has such an important role to play for people with dementia. Music and singing are something that the person with dementia and the carer can share together – when so many other interests and activities can no longer be enjoyed. Song lyrics and music seem to remain in the memory when other critical aspects are lost or forgotten. So it reminds the person of who they are and allows them a glimpse of their former self.

One of our carers says; “My wife is now locked into a narrowing world. Songs for You opened a window for her. It allows her to sing and it gives me, for an all too short time, a little of my wife back. It is the best hour of our week!”

Jessica Kent, Arts for Health Manager added “We are grateful to the Postcode Community Trust for their support in enabling us to roll out this programme which we hope will support over 500 people during the lifetime of the project.”

Songs for You will resume after Easter in Stafford on Monday 16th April 1.30pm at Walton Village Hall, Green Gore Lane, Walton on the Hill, Stafford ST170LD and in Cannock on Tuesday 10th April 1.30pm at St Thomas’s Church, Stafford Road, Huntington WS12 2PD and in Shrewsbury on Thursday April 12th at 2.30pm, The Trinity Centre, Meole Brace Church, Meole Brace, Shrewsbury SY3 9HF.
